An in-depth look at pressure sores using monolithic silicon pressure sensors

Three-dimensional scalar pressure distributions were measured in solid tissue near bony prominences in vitro in meat and in vivo in pigs using silicon pressure sensors. Data are in accord with previous theoretical models and indicate that pressure is three to five times higher internally near a bony prominence than it is at the skin over the prominence. Pressure sores are thus thought to begin internally; by the time they are evident at the skin, the sore has worked its way completely from bone to skin. This conclusion is in accord with previous clinical data. Future measurement of local vector forces is needed to fully characterize the force distribution in vivo.

T wave changes in humans and dogs during experimental dives.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis was performed in three human divers studied at 21 and 23.5 ATA while they breathed various gas mixtures containing H2 and/or He (COMEX HYDRA IX experiment) and in five dogs exposed to 91 ATA of He-O2 or He-N2-O2. In all cases, the O2 partial pressure was slightly higher than its physiological value. These human and animal studies reveal that elevated pressure of different inert gases did not change the resting heart rate or its respiratory fluctuation. However, the T wave amplitude increased in proportion to the gas density in the three divers; this was also found in four of the five dogs studied. Changes in peak T wave configurations were also observed in the dog experiments. Positional changes in QRS or T vectors cannot explain these T wave changes.

R483, an atypical, I pilus-determining plasmid, and also R144, a typical one, were shown to suppress the DnaA phenotype by integration into the Escherichia coli chromosome.     

Peroxisomes and peroxisomal functions in muscle. Studies with muscle cells from controls and a patient with the cerebro-hepato-renal (Zellweger) syndrome

In the present study we investigated peroxisomal functions in cultured human muscle cells from control subjects and from a patient with the Zellweger syndrome, a genetic disease characterized by the absence of morphologically distinguishable peroxisomes in liver and kidney. In homogenates of cultured muscle cells from control subjects, catalase is contained within subcellular particles, acyl-CoA:dihydroxyacetonephosphate acyltransferase activity is present and palmitoyl-CoA can be oxidized by a peroxisomal beta-oxidative pathway; these findings are indicative of the presence of peroxisomes in the cells. In homogenates of cultured muscle cells from the patient with the Zellweger syndrome, acyl-CoA:dihydroxyacetonephosphate acyltransferase activity was deficient, peroxisomal beta-oxidation of palmitoyl-CoA was impaired and catalase was not particle-bound. These findings indicate that functional peroxisomes are absent in muscle from patients with the Zellweger syndrome. We conclude that cultured human muscle cells can be used as a model system to study peroxisomal functions in muscle and the consequences for this tissue of a generalized dysfunction of peroxisomes.     

Intrinsic and extrinsic variables controlling the productivity of asexual populations of Nais spp, (Naididae,Oligochaeta)

The productivity of Nais spp. from periphyton of fishponds of the Dombes area (Ain) was studied in semi-natural conditions by cultivation of zooids in experimental glass enclosures immersed in situ and filled with pond water receiving injections of fertilizers (P₂O₅) and natural filtered periphyton extracts (particles < 70 µm). The growth rate of the experimental populations was not significantly affected by the concentration of fertilizers added to culture media. On the contrary, the water management of the culture media (as renewal or non-renewal of the water in experimental enclosures), the closing procedure of the enclosures and the load and composition of the nutritive substrate controlled the produced biomass. Temperature and food supply were the principal extrinsic variables controlling the asexual growth rate of the Nais species. The stolonization rate was analyzed as a biological parameter implicated in the instantaneous birth rate of zooids and the growth of naidid populations.     

Forces in the spider orb web

Summary Pretensile forces were measured in individual threads of intact spider webs. In the orb web of Araneus diadematus forces decrease from mooring threads to frame threads and radii, a typical ratio being 1071. The smaller number of radii in the upper than in the lower half of the orb is paralleled by force ratios of 21 to 31. A similar difference between radii built first during web construction and radii added after completion of the frame underlines the importance of the former as part of the scaffolding. High tensions in the auxiliary spiral stabilize the radii in addition to providing a pathway for the spider when inserting the sticky spiral. Radial pretension (F) changes with spider mass (m). F/m is similar for different animals indicating an adaptation of radial forces to those resulting from spider mass. Several observations suggest tension control by the spider. When forced to anchor its web to thin flexible rods tension in the threads remains in the normal range. Tension values are similar in the webs of A. diadematus, Zygiella x-notata, Nuctenea umbratica, and Nephila clavipes indicating independence from details of web geometry. Only the mooring threads of Nephila show unusually large forces suggesting a narrower working range of tensions for the catching area than for the scaffolding.
